tripadvisorThis cemetery is well maintained. Being in the desert it doesn't have the manicured lawns of those elsewhere in the country, but it has a hint of beauty all the same. Two graves that stand out are those of the first Sergeant Major of the Army and George Jefferson, Sherman Hemsley.
MoreFirst time l've been to a national cemetery, when it was closed on a Saturday, Sunday, and a Monday. No one on the military installation could tell me why. The advertised directions are bogus because the gates are permanently closed. No alternate entry provided.
MoreGreat to visit and honor late family members. Never forget and always hold family in our hearts. #elpaso #fortbliss…..
MoreThe Ft. Bliss cemetery is a large area with many veterans and spouses buried here. The cemetery does have a schedule when flowers, artificial and live are removed monthly. Since I am only able to visit my parents site every 5 years, I appreciate the fact that I can secure a free plastic vase and put artificial flowers in that. Live flowers might be better, but with the heat in El Paso, that is unrealistic. The gravel is quite acceptable due to the water shortage in El Paso. There is an organization who accepts $15.00 donation every Christmas to place a live wreath on the grave that you specify. I place several wreaths for my friends and make a donation for others in the cemetery. You can research the website EP wreaths org.
MoreFloral rules state items will be removed when unsightly, HOWEVER, I have seen dried up dead flowers sit at grave sites for WEEKS that do not get cleaned up by the grounds keepers on a regular basis. Some grave sites have artificial flowers in vases all the way around the headstones, just too much, really ugly looking. Nice to be able to leave artificial flowers, especially since there's NO grass, just that NASTY pea gravel, but maybe there should be a limit on the number of vases at the grave sites.
