The Oxford Hotel Hotel

Built in 1891, the Oxford Hotel, situated next to Union Station in LoDo, has endured more ups and downs than a roller coaster. The hotel, designed by Frank E. Brooke, renowned architect of the Brown Palace, served Denver's early Silver Boom. After a long history of booms and busts, including a lengthy spell on skid row, the hotel has again emerged as the city's premier destination for business travelers.

The Oxford Hotel is charming and central many walkable tourist areas. The Cruise Room bar, off the lobby, is a unique stop and the cocktails are good. Likewise, Urban Farmer restaurant is also off the lobby and is a top choice for dinner even if you aren’t staying at the hotel. The hotel offers free whiskey tasting at 5 PM, although I did not care for the whiskies offered by the hotel. Breakfast was limited, but tasty.

The hotel itself was charming, but unfortunately, the service fell well below expectations. We stayed for three nights, and not once was our room cleaned or serviced during our entire stay. When I brought this to the attention of the front desk, the only explanation offered was that they had been busy, with no apology or attempt to make things right.Daily housekeeping is a basic expectation when staying at a hotel, especially at this price point. While we appreciated the hotel’s atmosphere, the lack of service and the dismissive response from staff were disappointing. For what we paid, we expected a much higher level of hospitality.

I had a wonderful stay at the Oxford. The decor is beautiful, the hotel smells fabulous, and everything feels thoughtful and distinctive. I loved the bourbon tasting, and the food was great (especially the devilled eggs). The staff were helpful and kind throughout my stay. The bartender deserves a special mention. He was absolutely hysterical and made the evening even more fun. I’d recommend the Oxford to anyone looking for a cool place to stay near Union Station. I’d happily stay here again.

There is no doubt the hotel is beautiful and full of history and character. The staff are pleasant. The problem that we had is we paid top dollar for a 5 star experience and recieved at best a 2 star experience. Getting a night away from our kids is near impossible but when the in-laws came into town we took advantage of that opportunity. We just wanted the opportunity to sleep in. But that was stripped from us because of a street event that was happening right outside of our window. We were woke up at around 7am (not sleeping in) to the roaring sound of the crowd screaming. I understand that the hotel was not to blame for the noise but they could have told us that there was a chance of loud noise early morning. They could have also gave us the option of moving to a room that is on the opposite side of the building. But neither of these things happened. They also did not apologize for the noise. The very thing we wanted out of staying at a hotel (sleep) was robbed from us without consideration. And if you pay the premium of staying at a premium hotel you want a premium experience. We just did not get that. There is no way I will pay $500 to stay here again knowing this and I recommend you consider what you want out of your stay at a hotel. If it is sleep then maybe look elsewhere and he'll, even save some money while you're at it.

I stayed here for two nights during a business conference. The location of this hotel is it's greatest perk. It's a VERY easy two minute walk from Union Station making getting there if you take the train in from the airport a breeze. There are also a number of a great restaurants and bars in the area that you can get to from the hotel with ease. While it is the oldest hotel in downtown Denver, I struggle to call it a luxury property. It feels worn down and in need of some true maintenance, not just another coat of pain on the very beat up baseboards. My room was a decent size and the bed did sleep well. The bathroom was fine. The shower/tub combo is not designed for someone shorter than 5'5 however. It is a very high ledge to have to get over. I prefer to not have to sit on the edge and swing my legs over as I don't know how well that ledge may or may not have been previously cleaned. Housekeeping was lacking. They only partially remade the bed, didn't refill any of the coffee supplies I had used and didn't resupply used towels. I also notice a considerable amount of dust and dust bunnies in corners and under furniture showing a lack of deep cleaning in quite some time. I expect that from a Holiday Inn Express, not a property who claims to be a luxury experience. Overall, at this hotel, you are paying for proximity to Union Station, Coors Field and other downtown Denver attractions. So, if you can overlook some of the things above and want to be in the heart of downtown, then this could be a great value for you. I don't know if I would choose to stay here again though.
