Nice to see the place where the plane was perfected!
Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center Landmark ·$

The Huffman Field, or the Huffman Prairie Flying Field is an open patch of land near Dayton, Ohio. This field is special because this is the place where the Wright brothers, credited with building the first operational airplane often tested their inventions. Later, the Wright Flying School was also operated at this place. This National Historic Landmark is also on the U.S. World Heritage Tentative List. Visitors can also see a reproduction of the 1905 hangar and catapult of the Wright brothers at the field.

We went after a visit to the Air Force museum right down the road. There is a small building with some exhibits and things to look at. We were inside maybe 15 minutes. There was a movie theater area but we didn’t go in to watch. We then walked across to the monument and on to look out over the hills. There were some plaques to read. It was too grown up to see the areas on the plaques in the distance. It needs some upkeep on the grounds overall. It wasn’t terrible but there were some broken benches and the water fountain outside was broken. It was fine but glad we didn’t make a special trip to see it. We didn’t go on to the field down the road after the park ranger guide inside said to make sure to have bug spray because of ticks.

Came first thing in the morning and i was the only person here. To be at the place where so much history was created was just amazing. Some interesting information on the boards as you walk around. Spent a bit of time just taking in all in. Was a wonderful way to start the day before another day at the National Museum of the US Air Force

Good trip. We arrived at approximately 9:30 am and made our way towards the entrance of the museum. Admission into the museum was free, which is always a plus. There were multiple informational plaques scattered throughout the museum that provided some background information on the Wright brothers and the process behind building the first airplane. There were also several artifacts out for display, along with several short video clips that had to do with the invention of the first flying machine. After we were done exploring the main exhibit we made our way to the theatre room where we watched an excellent 30 minute film titled The Wright Brothers: On Great White Wings. The film went into detail about the brothers early life and the trials and tribulations they faced when building the first airplane. After watching the film we made the roughly 15 minute drive to the actual flying field the brothers practiced on. After a short walk, we were able to view a replica of the hanger they stored their airplane and equipment in. There were also more informational plaques scattered alongside the walking path that detailed the early struggles the brothers faced when building the first flying machine. Tip: I recommend spending 2.5 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

I would recommend seeing both the interpretive center and the field. Watch the video if you didn’t see it at the cycle shop. There is a monument there also. Field is easy to get to and worth the drive. It’s great to see where they actually did their trials. Reproduction rail and catapult system and barn on display. No crowds.
