Located on the north side of downtown, this stately structure, built in 1906, originally served as Boulder's first public library. After closing and remaining vacant throughout the 1970s, the library system renovated the Greek inspired building and reopened it in 1983. Now, the facility acts as a reference branch and contains a wealth of historical data on the town's evolution, including a database of more than 200,000 photographs. Diaries penned by early settlers, genealogical papers, and other rare documents from the Boulder Historical Society complement the image collection.

tripadvisorMy husband's maternal grandfather was originally from the Boulder area. We had previously explored Boulder Canyon Dr looking for his grandfather's old homesite based on a very vague description from his family. After striking out, we passed a branch of the public library, and I suggested to him to stop and ask if any library resources could help him. We were told to visit the Carnegie Branch. At the Carnegie Branch, he found not only records of his grandfather, but his great grandfather and great-great grandfather. He got newspaper clippings of his grandfather's wedding announcement, a photo of his great-great grandfather, and several other news clippings about his family he never got to know in the Colorado area. It really helped him to connect with that part of his family, and he's excited to share what he found with his mother. It was probably the most satisfying experience of his trip into Colorado. The librarians were extremely helpful to both my husband and myself. They helped him with research and scanning electronic copies to his email, while other helped me by suggesting children's activities. They have a box of children's books and worksheets, but they also recommended another branch of the library 10 minutes walk way with a more children friendly atmosphere.

MoreI wanted to research and this is the place to research Boulder County local history. The librarians were a huge help. City, County, and cemetery Directories, tax assessor and many other records are readily available. Within a short time I had all the information that I needed. A genealogist's delight. Metered, on-street parking.
