Made an impromptu stop off in Salem on a road trip along the West Coast and found this place on Google Maps, as a bit of an av geek I had to make the trip out to see it.It's a bit tricky to find, in a corner of Salem airport and accessed by phoning a number on the gate.I received a very warm welcome from the two volunteers and was given a full guided tour which was extremely informative. The guys here are clearly very devoted to the project and are extremely knowledgeable about the aircraft and wartime history. As a Brit, it was particularly interesting to get a view on WW2 from an American's perspective given that we think we know everything about it!Seeing the work they're doing in action to get this magnificent plane back in the air, I was simply awestruck. By visiting, you'll be helping them fund the restoration which makes it a worthy stop in itself.

We go occasionally to see how the volunteers are doing on restoring this gem of an airplane. It's slow going and taking a ton of money. The little gift store has donated books you can purchase along with other items that directly benefit the restoration. The volunteers are happy to tell you about it all.

I saw Lacey's B-17 on top of the restaurant in east Portland, on Hwy 99E, many years ago. There's a great story about how it got there. I'm glad to see that it is out of the rain and it is being restored to flying condition. It will be one of only a few flying examples that the entire country will enjoy. I could have have spent more time talking to the volunteers. One knowledgeable veteran provided personal knowledge about the Norden bombsight. This B-17 is as much an Oregon story as it is a piece of American history.

See a WW II B-17 being restored after having been atop of a service station since 1947. Also see a lot of aviation memorabilia.A great historic visit.

My wife and I attended the Fly-In/ Living History/ Car Show Event. We had a great time at the event, and enjoyed looking at the progress on the B-17. I'd love my son to be able to see the plane when it's completed.
