Of the various steps to reading proficiency, the most essential skill is that of decoding. Without a clear, systematic method of instruction, reading can be challenging and frustrating--like putting a puzzle together without all the pieces. At Cornerstone Academics we use a phonetic program based linguistically on the 44 sounds in English. Thirteen lessons focus on decoding rules. A typical session consists of a review of previous rules, learning new rules, and practice of rules whether through exercises or reading aloud. We never use flash cards. (promotes memorizing) We never use objects, colors or physical movements to represent sounds. (too much unnecessary information) We never use pictures in teaching. (promotes guessing) The process of decoding words as naturally as possible establishes the foundation for all the other steps in reading, e.g., fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development.
