The ~25 minute mine tour starts in the Ponderosa Saloon in the heart of S. C Street. It provides good info and insight about the mines and mining experience in the Comstock Lode/Virginia City area. Grant was a terrific tour guide and answered questions throughout the tour.

This tour starts in the Ponderosa Saloon. While we waited for our tour, we cooled off, used the wifi and browsed historic pictures on the wall. The tour was informative and gave us a glimpse into the daily life, pay, and hazards faced by miners. Our tour guide knew his stuff! It was 100 degrees outside but way cooler underground. We paid $14 per adult, $6 for children.

My husband and I decided on this mine tour because it was so accessible. It was interesting, and the guide did share some amusing stories. It was a quiet day, and there were only four on the tour. The tour guide seemed bored and often distracted. He would show us something on a map but then stand between us and the map so we couldn't see what he was talking about. He would tell a story and then lose focus as to where he was in the story. I would probably not recommend this particular mine tour.

First, and most important, if you do decide to take this tour anyway after I highly recommend that you don't, DO NOT take the tour with Sally as your guide. Make sure your tour is with the young man who also does tours. Sally spewed her political views and constantly flirted with a young man named Grant (young enough to be her grandson), throughout our entire tour. The group that she took into the mine was too large for the space needed to perform the tour to everyone's needs. The back of the group was constantly unable to see any of the exhibits that she was speaking about. Poorly managed, would not recommend this to anyone.

This mine tour could have been informative and enjoyable; however, that experience was interrupted by our tour guide Sally. My family and I were the only ones on the tour. She told us right at the beginning that she was a curmudgeon who didn’t tolerate much. This lead into many instances of her informing us of her political views, through what she interpreted as humor. She was not funny. And probing questions about our political views. I told her we were there for information about the mine and what it must have been like to work in those conditions, political views aside. I was curtly told if I didn’t like her opinions I could leave and ask for my money back. I didn’t leave because I was with 16 family members and really wanted to see the mine.
