I attended a class on the study of Genesis and Spiritual Formation at the Franciscan School of Theology at the Mission San Luis Rey and it was a week of wonderful in-depth learning, a beautiful peaceful setting in the retreat center, and a focus on spiritual development taught by Father Garrett Gavin, a scripture scholar and Franciscan priest. There was also a silent retreat ongoing while we were taking the class and so many people were taking time to meditate, journal, reflect, and pray. Mission San Luis Rey calls out to us to take time to do all of these.... whether in our daily lives, or on a separate retreat, in a class, or in fellowship. We are called to transformation daily with the Holy Spirit.

During a silent retreat led by Insight, a Buddhist-oriented group, I was fascinated by watching bees drinking nectar. The formal gardens and surrounding meadows and old trees refreshed my spirit. The Mission served marvelous vegetarian meals, buffet style. The rooms are simple, with comfortable single beds, mostly two to a room. The staff are extremely helpful. Six miles from the Oceanside, CA train station, the mission seems very rural, with views of gentle hills, though modern malls are available within a few minutes if necessary. People can take a day of peace and reflection, have longer self-directed retreats, or join many groups which rely on the hospitality of this Franciscan mission established in 1798, and restored during the 20th century. Great care is taken of the huge, gnarled 200 year old pepper tree. I will go back and see the church one day.

It was a beautiful place to see, didn't know what to expect. We learned about the history of the first Mission in California and what it had gone through. Lots of artifacts and pictures. Very informative and relaxing to visit. About an hour visit time

Came to facilitate a retreat for medical students. A very peaceful and beautiful place. Staff and facilities are excellent. Food is outstanding. My favorite was the landscape, rose gradens and court yards
