Take a walk by the lake, have a picnic, or ride on the vintage 1914 carousel that is housed in one of America's first municipal parks. Since the mid-1850s, Bushnell Park has offered citizens a comfortable place to unwind away from the hustle-and-bustle of downtown Hartford. On the registry of National Historic Landmarks since 1970, the famous Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch dedicated to those in the Civil War is one of the major highlights as well as the Horace Wells Monument and the Corning Fountain.

tripadvisorGorgeous public park right in the middle of Hartford. The night we were in Hartford, we were able to see the July 4th weekend fireworks show launched from inside the park. Beautiful place to visit, lots of flora, gorgeous grounds, State Capitol building as well. Make sure to bring your camera.
MoreWe visited on a Saturday mid afternoon. It was not at all crowded. We saw the large soldiers arch, the fountain and beautiful carousel. They were setting up for a festival on Sunday so there was lots of vendors setting up. Not far from the park we were able to walk to Prat street for dinner. I was told they had shopping but in all honesty I didn’t even count 5 stores. Most the street was restaurants. It was a cute street with lots of people hanging out.
MoreWhile our plans prevented us for walking the park, I did get to see the park as we drove from lunch to the Capitol. The importance of this park to green space in the US is significant as the first publicly designed park. Have to leave something to come back for.
MoreI was in downtown Hartford for a business meeting. After the meeting finished, I went for a walk outside as the weather was nice. I happened upon this pretty place: there are sculptures, ponds, stone structures, and a large stone archway at one entrance to the park. When I was there, mid-day during the week, the area was not crowded.
MoreBushnell Park has lots of things to do. The park has a bandshell, a pond, a playground, walking paths, and a carousel. There should be picnic tables in the park.
