Howe-Waffle House and Medical Museum is named so because it belonged to Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle, who was one of the first female physicians in the entire county till she died in 1924. Built by Stoughton and George in 1889, the Late Victorian Queen Anne style house now operates as Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle House and Medical Museum by the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society in honor of the original owner. It open for tours on the first Saturday of every other month, starting from February.

tripadvisorWe visited on the day of Guess the Gadgets. The tour was extensive with lots of interesting facts done by docents in period clothing. Several were children which completely enhanced the visit. Much was original pieces, others were lent or bought by the Historical Society. Those involved treasure the history and devote themselves to preserving it. Tea and cookies were served after. It was FANTASTIC
MoreIf you took a walk during jury duty in Santa Ana, you might have strolled by this striking, historic house. I've always wanted to tour it, but there are limited days and hours. When it was open on Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, I put it on my calendar. There was plenty of metered parking on the street nearby. It's a lovingly restored Queen Anne Victorian lived in by husband and wife doctors in the late 1880's. Docents were on hand to answer questions and offered tidbits of information not in the detailed brochure for the self-guided tour. Highlights for me were the woodwork, piano and organ, and the outfitted medical office. The life stories of the doctors were fascinating as well. The day we visited a woman was carding and spinning wool, so we got a chance to try it out. We also bought some local apple butter from a vendor. They have special events for holidays that I will definitely look into.
MoreThey are only open the first Saturday of every other month (Feb, April, etc). It's terrific. The people from the Historical Society dress up in period costumes, the tour is great, and they even give you tea and cookies on 100+ year old china. One of the best museum experiences ever.
MoreWe were going down to Orange County on a day that the House was open. We stopped for about an hour. It was interesting to see the Medical supplies. The house was nice. The volunteers were passionate. If you are nearby, I would recommend stopping in. The house is not open every day, check the schedule!
MoreBeautifully restored victorian with a small medical museum which is very interesting. They also have special events throughout the year which are a lot of fun.
