tripadvisorI was excited to see this bookstore (I always seek out indie bookstores when traveling). The selection was great and it's a nice airy space with room to relax while perusing the books. When I asked the young man at the desk whether they had any books by a particular writer (a Nobel prize winner, not an obscure scribbler) he had no idea who it was and had to ask me how to spell the name. He looked bored and uninterested As my friend and I were leaving the store, another employee noticed that we had just been on a tour of Macalester College (across the street from the store) and went on a tirade about how college is a waste of time and just saddles people with debt. I found this really odd and a bit inappropriate and unpleasant. This isn't someplace I would be anxious to visit again.
MoreIt’s in a quaint neighborhood and has a very nice selection of books. Staff was friendly and helpful. Seats were available to sit and browse through your selections.Did I say it was a LOCAL bookstore. A Dunn Bros coffee was just around the corner.
MoreWhat a great way to spend a few hours in St. Paul! Here you find wooden floors, leather chairs and a wonderful variety of books, along with friendly, informative staff. This bookstore has a large selection of poetry - a wonderful find. It was so enjoyable finding the staff’s notes and recommendations written on notecards tucked between the books. Also enjoyable was the wide variety of books on travel, current events, history, cooking, etc... and I have to say I purchased the most diverse selection of books from this bookstore. This is a must stop when I return to the Twin Cities.
MoreThis is Garrison Keillor's place, and it shows: quirky, sharp, and fun. A booklover's paradise, Books are clustered in interesting ways, obviously reader-oriented. We had three grandchildren and their parents with us, and everyone found something of interest, easily. It was an expensive visit...and I loved it!
MoreOf course most everyone knows this bookstore is owned by a famous person. If you don't know who that is, you will have to ask. This bookstore is great! It has that homey atmosphere, unpretentious, not fancy. This is an old building and the hardwood floors creak as you browse. You will find a wonderful variety of new books here, many that you would never find in the big bookstore chains. The selections are categorized nicely and displayed both on tables and shelves. Their travel section is most impressive. I was seeking a new non-fiction book I heard of, and of course I did find it. Great place to browse for the popular standards but many more obscure great reads. I have been in many bookstores all over the country, and this is among the best I have seen.
