The best way to see this area is just walk as there is quite a lot of history in the area including the James White Fort, Blount Mansion and the Visitor Center. You can then walk downtown as there is some very interesting old buildings. Knoxville had a good atmosphere and much more history than expected.

Few photos exist of Civil War times and events. Their panorama of Knoxville placed overhead is surprising. AT&T trees had been cut for miles around the city for defenses, housing and fuel. Few trees survived that. Also trees were cut to remove cover for snipers.

With so much history surrounding the Civil War Gateway, it is so worth your time to peruse all of the beauty and surroundings that this area by the riverbank provides. Guided walking tours are available by appointment, however, a self guided walking tour is available at the gateway visitor's center which is located just beside the Blount Mansion. Whether choosing a guided or self tour this provides much history during the 1800's preceding and precluding the Civil War.
