Looking at the photos I was so excited! I’m a bit of a history buff and after some convincing my partner came with me, when we got there the initial sign and front information booth is in great condition! Uhm… that’s about it. I appreciate how informative the signs were but everything else was gone! Just signs in a field.. I was very disappointed, my partner however thought it was hilarious, like cracking up the whole way through. It’s a nice place to stop and walk but the pictures are very misleading, and the address is wrong on trip advisor.

This is a humble place, a small Civil War POW camp, that has not been restored, but has a path around it and even has a part that is handicapped accessible. It has excellent signage and presents a clear and factual account of what happened there and then you can look out over the area or walk around it to get a picture of what used to be. The camp was fairly well organized for hygiene and comfort (by the prisoners themselves), quite a contrast to Andersonville, which we visited earlier in our rambles. Food was still lacking, but that was true for the surrounding civilians as well. The signs tell of this and more. If you are a Civil War buff and in the area, this is a nice place to visit. Go to El Jilo for lunch afterwards! Or there is a picnic table close to the highway.

The signs on the entry are about all that's left or mildly interest.Pretty much a bust driving to Tyler to see it.

This seems like it could be a much more interesting area. (Probably a funds issue) We read the documents and that really is about it. We walked the circle but the pictures and info don't really work with the area so not sure it is beneficial to walk it at all. The structures are not relevant of the time line you are reading about.

Historic tour of an old used-to-be. I liked it. But I’m a Civil War buff. The tour is self guided and a little derelict. However, you get an idea of the prison camp if you step back and study the terrain. You can still recognize earthworks and other details. I guess a civic group or maybe Boyscouts threw up some dugout shelters and what not. Pretty neat area for a stroll if you need to stretch your legs.
