We stopped by after leaving Doughton Park picnic area and found it to be very interesting. The ranger inside the cabin was working on weaving a rug. She was really informative and told us about the people who lived in the cabin. We really enjoyed listening to her. There are only the cabin, another small shed plus a spring shed. Definitely worth a stop.

This small cabin, garden and out buildings are nicely annotated to educate the visitor about the life of the Brinegars during their lives here and the building of the Parkway.

What a remarkable woman!! Mrs. Brinegar lived a busy life in the 1800's, I would guess. That little cabin really made me realize how hard they had to work, and yet how happy they must have been.

It is at milepost 281.5 at Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I just wanted to make this correction. My mother and her friend worked there and ran the Cabin for 23 years. They sold handmade crafts and wove rugs on an old loom. In the years since it was a gift shop it has had demonstrations and talks including history of the Brinegar family by the Park Rangers.
