tripadvisorI have been spending two weeks in New Mexico on vacation and did not realize how little I knew about the state. When I learned there were dormant volcanoes, I had to see for myself. There was an easy trail to walk around the base of two of the volcanoes, and another more strenuous trail around the third. Since there were other things I wanted to do that day, I skipped the harder trail. It was a pretty easy hike. Luckily I went early because there is no shade and this could be a problem on a hot day. I am so glad I went and I added volcanoes to the new things I like about New Mexico
MoreThe Volcano Park is actually a day use area on the western side of Petroglyph National Monument. The three cinder cones were the last vents of a massive erupting fissure of lava that poured out the bluffs on the west side of town. The cones are not individually very tall, but they form a ledge from which you get a wonderful view of the city and the Sandias to the east. The whole trail is about three miles, mostly level, with some more demanding stretches looping around Vulcan Volcano, the largest and most dramatic of the three. The place abounds with cactus, scrub, lizards, and vultures.
MoreIt was 100 degrees out...but no humidity so it felt like 90. Agreed that when you got up higher it had a nice cool breeze. There was shade in shelters along the trek, but don't plan on this being a place to bring grandma. Easy trek up to Vulcan, but a bit more challenging toward Black Volcano. It was fun and the explanations by the park service was well done.
MoreCool trail around some volcanoes. It is a little bit over 3 miles to see all three but the trail only goes around the base. You can't climb to the top due to restoration programs taking place. There also isn't any shade so plan accordingly.
MoreThis whole area is quite Brown, barren, and exposed, which means wicked hot, dry, dusty, and winds. There is so much wonderful terrain for outdoor exploration around Albuquerque that are more welcoming or more appealing.
