tripadvisorAn Atlas missile was housed at Subterra Castle from 1961-1964. The site was purchased and restored by Ed Peden and his wife Dianna. They open up their home to visitors with reservations and share the history of the site. Dianna was not home for our visit but Ed was very gracious and spent two hours with us. We saw how and where the missile was stored. Ed, as an owner and retired history teacher, is very knowledgeable about the site and that period of time in our history. I'd recommend this tour to anyone.
MoreThis is not what I expected. I thought we would see an upright missile launch base. This was more of the first design which laid down and was, through a series hydraulic rams, set upright to fire. Our host were very gracious allowing us to go through their home.
MoreWhat an incredible adventure. We took two of our adult daughters and four of our grandchildren to see, experience and feel a picture of what almost happened in the Cuban Missile crisis in 1962. We were able to see how the early Atlas missiles were stored in concrete bunkers ready to attack Russia, specifically Moscow. We were able to experience what those early Missilers must have felt as they had their hands on the buttons to launch a ICBM in a potential nuclear war. Ed Peden, one of the co-owners gave us a two hour tour to see what the missile complex was like in 1960-1964. Ed was gracious, friendly and very knowledgeable, as a retired History professor. What an opportunity to see history as it unfolded in the early 1960's.. This is worth every bit of the tour price. What an incredible glimpse into the most critical time in recent history, when President John F. Kennedy ignored and rejected the counsel of his military advisors and did not launch ICBM toward Moscow. You really need to see it.
