tripadvisorWe did this tour at 4 in the afternoon when most of the town was closing down for the day. We took a 14 mile up and back driving tour in a 5-ton military vehicle. The seats were very comfortable and blankets were provided for the ride as it got a little chilly up in the mountains. The drive was beautiful and there were many interesting artifacts pointed out along the way. The history of the region as well as specific interest points was explained clearly. This is run by a nice little family. I’d recommend this tour. They also offer a haunted tour if you were there later in the day. Discounts for military or veterans. Big thumbs up!!!
MoreI have been up Alder Gulch several times but this was by far the best. The driver/tour guide was very informative on the local lore and history. The military truck goes farther up the gulch than most people dare in a standard car or truck. Well worth the ticket price.
MoreReasonable and fun way to see Alder Gulch. I think our driver is also the owner. He was very knowledgeable. Great way to learn more about the area while doing something fun
MoreIn a tourist destination, where everything is about history, we learned the most about Virginia City and the gold rush on this tour. The guide/driver was awesome; turns out he is a teacher in real life. You will also get some great views of Montana nature, that can't be beat; unless you are up to doing your own mountain hiking. Unfortunately parts of the route he takes are not holding up well (differently can't be called a road). So it's not clear how long he will be still able to offer the 90 minute tour. If you are hoping to learn something, during your visit to Virginia City, this is the place to go.
MoreIn July 2015, we searched for something different to do in Virginia City -- and we definitely found it in the Nelson Offroad tour. We saw a huge military transport complete with camouflage paint, advertising 90 minute off road tours parked near the Train Depot. Our grandson was really excited, and we have pictures showing the tires were taller than this 9 yr old! Access was easy into the back of the truck that was comfortably outfitted in school bus seats with a canvas tarp provided for shade, so even grandma had no problem climbing up the stairs provided. We were entertained throughout the tour by our outstanding driver & guide, who shared a constant stream of information, history, humor and little known facts as we traveled on dirt roads & trails into the back country. The scenery is spectacular and even though we've visited Virginia City many times, we saw places and scenic beauty we had never seen. This off road tour is a treat for all ages! Nelson Offroad advertises other tours that are available, including night tours complete with ghost stories -- so we're planning other adventures soon.
