The Hilbert Museum of California Art is one of the best places in the country for California Art. Named after Mark and Janet Hilbert who endowed some of their collections to the museum and also donated a sizable amount to build it, this repository is indeed a must for art lovers. Showcasing 247 works including watercolors, lithographs, oils, animation and movie art, the collection takes you through the varying scenes of California from the 1920s to the 1970s. Notable Californian masters from the 20th Century like Emil Kosa Jr, Joan Irving, Milford Zornes, Francis Caldwell and Ruth Peabody feature in their collection.

The museum houses an impressive collection of California art with more than 5,000 water colors, oil paintings and prints on rotation throughout the year. The Hilbert’s collection beautifully captures the state’s history and culture.I also had the pleasure of meeting Mark Hilbert and his son. Their family’s passion for art, education, and community is truly inspiring and will undoubtedly enrich generations to come. Best of all, admission is complimentary, making this an incredible cultural resource for the entire community, Chapman college students, and families. If you haven’t visited yet, I highly recommend adding the Hilbert Museum to your list!
MoreWow, what a gem of a museum. I've been to over a hundred museums around the world, and for its size, this is one of the best. We loved the Jorgen Klubien show, so perfectly curated, highlighting how some of the magic at Disney and Pixar begins. The focus on Art with California connections was also very interesting and the cards that describe a little about the artist, and the inspiration and location was appreciated. The people were so friendly and helpful in sharing other information about the art as well. Thank you to the Hilberts for gifting this to the public. And wow, free admission! We plan to come back every year.
MoreThe Hilbert is one of my favorite stops whenever I’m in Orange County. The museum features an exceptional mix of historical and contemporary California art, and the rotating exhibits mean there’s always something new to discover.The current California Art Club exhibition is outstanding, and there are also rotating Disney displays for Disney fans and fascinating vintage and antique radio exhibits. The artwork is phenomenal, and the docents are friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to share their expertise.I’ve attended several of the museum’s guest lectures as well, and they’ve always been informative and enjoyable. Best of all, general admission is free, making this incredible museum one of Orange County’s true treasures. Highly recommended!
