Having been away from Barton Springs for a few years, we decided that the time (& temperature) was right to rediscover the local treasure. Initially, we found that parking by the pool was incredibly competitive. Searching across the road from the springs, we found lots of (paid) parking on Stratford Drive. To our pleasant surprise, we found a free shuttle. The friendly, informative driver saved us many steps and an air-conditioned ride to the pool. The magically invigorating waters of Barton Springs were just the trick to snap us out of the body & mind melting heat of Texas in July. Being a weekend day, it was a bit crowded, as more than a few others remembered how nice this place is, but there was plenty of frigid water to enjoy. Once we were rejuvenated & refreshed, we hopped onto the waiting shuttle bus that brought us back to our parking lot. The driver told us that they are running every weekend through the summer. Nice free service, Zilker folks!!

The friendly, informative drivers saved us many steps and an air-conditioned ride, to & from the pool. I highly recommend this free shuttle service!

Zilker Park is Austin’s giant front lawn — sprawling, busy, and full of every outdoor activity imaginable happening at once. On any given day you’ll see dogs chasing frisbees, people picnicking like it’s a competitive sport, and someone doing yoga in a spot that makes you wonder if they’re performing for the whole park. The lawn stretches out forever, and on a sunny day it feels like half the city is out there claiming a patch of grass.Yes, the Zilker Zephyr (the little train) still exists in spirit, though it’s been through closures and rebuilds. The current version — the Zilker Eagle — runs a short loop that’s basically nostalgia on wheels. Kids love it, adults tolerate it, and everyone agrees it’s one of those Austin things that doesn’t need to make sense to be charming.Down by Barton Springs Pool, the real show is the area where the pool overflows into Barton Creek. It’s almost always packed with families, college kids, and anyone who didn’t feel like paying admission or dealing with lifeguards. It’s a lively, slightly chaotic stretch of water — people wading, floating, splashing, and generally having a great time in a spot that feels like Barton Springs’ unofficial side‑door entrance.Parking is its own adventure, especially on weekends, and you’ll see people trekking across the park like they’re on a pilgrimage from wherever they finally found a spot. But once you’re in, it’s easy to settle into the mix of sunshine, crowds, and classic Austin energy.

Zilker Metropolitan Park is one of those places that really shows off Austin at its best. It sits right along the Colorado River and somehow manages to feel both lively and laid-back at the same time. It’s also where big events like Austin City Limits Music Festival happen, so it’s a pretty iconic spot.The park is perfect for an easy outdoor day. There are plenty of flat, beginner-friendly trails, and many connect to the beautiful Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake—about 5.5 miles of really nice views. You can also rent kayaks or cool off at Barton Springs Pool, which is a must on a hot day.There’s a lot of open space to relax, picnic, or just enjoy the skyline, which makes it easy to spend a few hours here without getting bored.Only downside: some cyclists go really fast on the shared paths, which can feel a bit unsafe if you’re walking with kids or pets. It takes away from the otherwise chill vibe.Still, it’s a great spot overall and definitely worth a visit if you’re in Austin.

Terrific large green space in the middle of an urban area. You can kayak on Barton Creek or swim at Barton Springs Pool which has been created by natural springs. There is a botanical garden, a miniature train, sports fields, playgrounds, picnic facilities, and biking and walking trails. Zilker Park is a wonderful oasis for local city dwellers and is also worth a visit for out-of-town visitors.
