We were staying at a VRBO right next to Lizard Butte. It was a beautiful view. It is a .4 mile hike with elevation 144ft. You pull up on the rock road at the bottom and walk up. You don't want to drive up higher as it is private property (where we were staying). At the top, it offers 360 degree gorgeous views of Snake River Wine Country.

On a beautiful sunny April day while visiting the Boise area, we drove down to the wine country and sighted Lizard Butte. Wondering how to get to the top, we found a dirt road (with no signs that it was private property), and followed it to near the top. We then climbed to the top for some spectacular views. However, upon driving out the same way we came in, we were confronted by an elderly couple (the woman producing a gun aimed directly at us) and telling us we were on private property and to leave immediately. We expressed our misunderstanding and turned around, as directed, and left via a different dirt road where we then saw a private property sign. What a shock to our systems. We are not used to having a gun pointed at us. We are all in our 60s and decent tourists and scared out of our minds. And I assume these are the people who pretend to be Christian (as we are) and open Lizard Butte up for sunrise Easter services?? So a word of warning, stay away from these crazy people.

Have attended the Lizard Butte Sunrise Service for many years, the views from the top of the rock are breath taking.

Fascinating geological landmark in the Idaho Wine Country. Long used has a site for Easter sunrise services reached by wagon or on horseback.

Droving along Highway 55 near the Sunnyslope area, you can view Lizard Butte, an ancient geological formation that looks like a resting lizard, complete with a reared head and extended tail. The formation is a volcanic vent similar to those found at Craters of the Moon. There is a trial that leads to the top of lizard butte and a cross made of railroad ties and concrete that has been erected at the top. If you do hike to the top, you will be rewarded with the best views of the Snake River Valley wine region. Since 1938, local church groups have offering Easter Sunday church services here next to the cross. Each Easter, service begins with a bugle call and scripture reading at sunrise.
