Saenger Theater Theater

The Saenger Theatre has been called the Grand Dame of Palafox, but the Saenger Theatre is much more than a Great Lady; she is a survivor. Opened in 1925, its Spanish Baroque architecture, in opulent Rococo style took nearly thirteen months to complete. Located in the heart of downtown Pensacola, the Saenger Theatre can supply the equipment, trained theatre staff, and the ambiance to showcase a variety of shows such as: Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Harry Connick Jr., David Copperfield, John Tesh, Wynton Marsalis, Ziggy Marley, CATS and Sesame Street.

Gary Allen concert. I don’t think it was on his tour calendar. So I believe they must not have done a thorough sound check. The opening band was uncomfortably loud. I had hopes it was just their band. But no. The concert was hardly bearable. Of course we were on the mezzanine. So maybe closer wasn’t as bad. My ears were ringing and painful for 30 minutes after the concert. Even after shoving wadded up paper napkins in my ears to endure the sound, and the feedback Decibles measured 100 consistently and up to 105 where we were sitting.

I bought tickets to see William Shatner, live on stage. When we arrived I discovered we had to watch wrath of khan before William shattner came on. About 15 minutes into the movie, the film failed. Took them 20 minutes to fix it. I chose to leave - I have no desire to watch bad video and audio of wrath of khan. Very misleading advertising, terrible technically.

The show was amazing, staff was terrible. I was accused of taking pictures I guess, not sure since I didn’t take any pictures. Staff had the police escort both me and my guest out of the theater. Won’t go back there were actually several folks around us that were recording.

I attended an America concert at the Saenger in Pensacola on July 30, 2023. I had second row seats center stage. I was unaware the theater had a no video or audio recording policy. I’ve recently attended three concerts at the Saenger Theater in Mobile and took many photos and videos. There wasn’t a problem doing so. Anyhow, I was taking a photo of the band at the America concert when someone behind me started poking me hard with their fingers on my shoulder repeatedly. I looked over my shoulder and this lady, probably a volunteer, had this hostile look on her face and told me to stop taking pictures and to turn off my phone. Her tone of voice matched the look on her face. I complied and didn’t say anything back to her. Throughout the concert people around me were taking video and photos with no consequences from the volunteer. The volunteer needs training with customer relations. There was no need to come across heavy-handed and hostile. She could simply have approached me from the front and told me there was a no audio or video recording policy at the theater. She definitely shouldn’t have but her hands on me.

This was our first visit to this theater, so I’m not sure if we just visited on an off day or if it’s always like this. The show itself, stage, orchestra, lighting, sets, etc, were great. The theater itself, though, ruined it for me. First, the theater opened late. By the time we got in, it was a mad rush for everyone to use the bathroom, get concessions, and find their seats. I visited three different bathrooms while at the theater, and in all of them there were various stalls out of order, stalls with toilets that wouldn’t flush, no toilet paper, etc. For a sold-out theater, that many unusable facilities causes a mess- literally and figuratively! Wi-fi issues closed down two of four concession lanes at one point so the wait was even longer. And the seats in the theater… I have never been more uncomfortable or cramped. We were crammed in like sardines, and the seats were so small. I could barely move. I’m not big or tall, and I couldn’t even cross my legs. Lastly, and this doesn’t reflect on the theater itself, but it detracted from the experience… the crowd was ridiculous. Loud, obnoxious… people arguing after being asked to keep it down… garbage thrown everywhere, drunk people yelling and causing a ruckus, drinks spilled all over the place… maybe I’m spoiled, but this is not what I envision when I get tickets to a musical at a theater. So disappointing.
