Before you say A post office is just a post office consider the beautiful historic building that is this one. A few years ago I even attended a classical music concert held in the space. Worth visiting.

This is a lovely historic building worth a visit. If you are coming for polite and fast service go to another post office. But do stop by at least once to see the structure.

The building was the first post office in Dutchess County built under the influence of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Also, the murals were painted in the President's direction, and the President himself made some corrections. As for you non-history buffs out there, they have consistently excellent service, as I can attest to, because I visit them on a regular basis!

In the barber shop the other day the barber commented about the Poughkeepsie Post Office. She said she did not think we would see that kind of public structure again. She marveled at the marble columns. It was built during the depression I believe. The cupola use to be gold leafed until a fire ended that embelishment. Walking up the many steps itself is inspirational, a feeling of pride in an American institution that does not fail us. The murals painted by artists as part of the New Deal WPA, are delightul one of early Poughkeepsie waterfront and others upstairs I think show the signing of the Constitution that took place in Poughkeepsie after the American Revolution. The parking out front is a challenge There are frequent lines for service.There is limited access upstairs. The employees though have always been knowledgeable, helpful and courteous and make the trip doubly worhwhile. It is a shame there is less access to the murals upstairs.

If you’re in the area, it’s worth the time to,wander through The Poughkeepsie post office and admire the many murals and historical architecture.
