No trails at visitor's center. We drove to Boca Negra Canyon. I could not climb the steps on the path. No issues. The photos I am posting were shot in first 5 minutes before I turned back.

It was my first contact with antient petroglyphs. This place is not far from the center of Albuquerque. It's easy to get there. You can spend there few hours taking all trails. I didn't have a luxury to be there for a long time. I've spent about an hour taking short hike to the top of the hill, trying not to miss any of the petroglyphs. Some of them are not visible from the bottom or from the trail. I am not sure if all of them are real ones, but most of them for sure.I recommend this place . It's a good start for the trip if you plan to see more attractions in the area.RomanP

Piedras Marcadas Canyon was recommended by the park ranger as having many old petroglyphs. We found it to be an easy hike with many petroglyphs. Take water as you are out in the open and beware of heavy winds. The trail is covered with sand and strong winds easily blow that sand around.

Only about 20 minutes west of Albuquerque you will find thousands of ancient petroglyphs etched into the boulders. A good first place to visit is the Visitor Center as it has a highly informative video that explains the geological, anthropological, and historical timeline for the land and the people. As to actually seeing the petroglyphs, know that they are easy ones to view those just up the trail as well as those much more treacherous to get to. Don’t be discouraged if you decide that the risk is too great to see everything for the easier ones to access are quite moving. Either way you’ll have a fulfilling experience.

Only good for a day with good weather, the walk through the rocks provides some vision into the past before mankind discovered the use of paper. Although there are some obvious graffiti, those Petroglyphs that were still visible were quite interesting. There are enough of them within close proximity to make a visit worthwhile when visiting this town, but don't bother going out of your way for it.
