We visited the Petroglyph National Monument on a Sunday morning. We walked the Boca Negra trail. We saw lots of petroglyphs. Pretty modest hike. Well worth the time

There are no trails from the visitor's center. There is a ranger there so you can ask questions and a little gift store where we bought water. We stopped there first because we wanted to find out which trail would be the easiest for us. I wanted one that did not change much in elevation. We went to the Piedras Marcadas Canyon Trail that was about 15 minutes away from the visitor's center. The address that we used for our map app wanted us to drive further than the parking lot, but we figured out where we needed to stop. There is no shade so wear a hat and bring water. We only did stops 1 through 4, but we saw plenty of petroglyphs. The trail was easy for us to maneuver. My husband used a walking stick, but I did not.

I did 3 of the shorter trails. Petroglyphs are everywhere, so take it slow so you won't miss anything. Most of the trails are flat and sandy, very easy on the knees. Some are steep on volcanic rock, but they are still short trails.

Free parking and free to get in. Multiple sites and trails. Clear and sunny Monday morning, mid 80's. Very helpful and friendly volunteer ranger to share maps and info. We decided on the half mile track, except it was uphill with limited handrails, and steps of various sizes. I'm 73 and in good shape for my age. Walking sneakers was not the best choice, but I continued at my own pace, and sipping water as needed. I took photos of the petroglyphs as I could, your cellphone is a better option than big equipment. The view is that you is good, but you are looking at empty space, a parking lot and nearby housing. Maybe not the smartest thing, but I knew I could do it.

We spent the afternoon here, including a stop at the visitors center to watch the orientation film and check out the shop. Car lanes, parking and paths are all clearly marked. The petroglyphs are simply everywhere you look. It was fascinating and humbling to be in the presence of these testaments to human life so long ago.
