tripadvisorThe shop was really cute with a bunch of different items. I ended up getting a unique, hand made necklace that was very reasonably priced. It was a great souvenir from our first day trip to Algona!
MoreReally enjoyed this gallery and the town of Algoma. Very friendly space with great pieces. A beautiful gallery to peruse and shop.
MoreVery impressive arts and crafts at this hidden away gallery. Just visited from the UK and found this gallery to present some very talented artists and also affordable. Algoma will not be a secret for long.
MoreUntil recently, the eastern (Lake Michigan side) of lovely Door County has been mostly overlooked. Albeit a little cooler, but just as charming as their Bayside counterparts, are the lakeside towns of Bailey's Harbor, and the quiet little fishing village of Algoma. While the quiet side of Door County is starting to get a more attention these days, I never expected to find such an exceptional little art gallery in the undiscovered town of Algoma. The James May Gallery is an affordable craft and art gallery with an urbane sensibility. You'll find ceramics here, not pottery. And while some of these ceramics may be functional, mostly they are pieces of art. Depending on what they may be showing at the moment you might find stylish, contemporary works of assemblage, painting, photography, or found object sculpture. When I was there, they also had a nice selection of designer crafted jewelry. I have a small collection of ceramics and glass that I have assembled on a very limited budget. This past January I moved to Door County from San Francisco. Finding tasteful, and unusual ceramics I liked, at a price I could afford, was hard enough in San Francisco. What was I going to find here? While Door County has many galleries, I never expected to find a gem like this one that catered to more than just the tourist traffic. Both times I came here, I purchased something. I believe there is also (at least) a second gallery worth visiting in Algoma, and it is a very pretty drive from the popular Bay side of Door County to Algoma. If you are a collector, or you simply enjoy quality galleries, the James May Gallery makes that drive even more worth your while.
