Had a great drive. Trails are multi use and clear. Watch for Moose on the road

Very nice park to walk, play frisbee golf, use the chalet! You can get to the shoreline! Walking path is paved and nice BUT you do share it with bicycling and some of those folks go very fast so be careful!VictorB

Anchorage is famous for its Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. This trail goes for miles along the coast. We were interested in something a bit different when my wife spied the Kincaid Park trails. There are lots of possible trails. The one we took led us back into the forest through rolling (mostly uphill – how do they do that?) hills. It was very pleasant. And along the way, both going and returning we saw a BIG bull moose just munching away at the prolific foliage. Amazing! He was quite used to people and we didn’t bother him at all. That was so neat. We also caught a glimpse of a black bear down the trail. He wasn’t very interested in us and disappeared quickly into the underbrush. We had a really nice hike – two or more miles.

Stayed in Anchorage 5 days prior to meeting friends for a cruise, to run a trail race and check out the town. I had no idea how much wild nature I would encounter in and around a city, though I did some research prior to the trip. I read about the large moose population and extensive trails at Kincaid Park, just south of the city, and mapped a 10 mile run on the Coastal Trail from the park to where I was staying in Anchorage. Took an uber to the park, walked around a bit, lots of people out for a beautiful day in early May. Spring had already made the trees and foliage come to life, and it was spectacular. Started my run, and on mile #2 a cyclist coming towards me yelled something (I was thinking did he say “bear”, nah couldn’t). So I kept going! A few minutes later 2 cyclists who passed me earlier were stopped.. so I stopped as we waited for two black bears to move on from whatever it was they felt like doing. It was fascinating, yet terrifying, at the same time. I did snap a photo of one of them, and man, once I started moving again, I ran VERY fast until I was out of the forest and on the more human populated part of the trail. On the way, also saw a moose, and lots of beautiful scenery. Great experience.

Beautiful large park with well maintained trails. The unpaved are a bit hilly but quite doable for hiking. Lots of beautiful flowers.
