tripadvisorSuch a quaint and spiritual place. The church was not open nor was the gift shop next door but we were able to walk around the grounds. We were first drawn to the cemetery as each grave had a unique “house” built over it. After looking it up, these are called spirit houses and have an interesting story of origin. You can easily park in front of the church and walk through the cemetery which is right beside the church.
MoreThe Church and Cemetery were just a short drive off the main highway between Anchorage and Palmer. It's a place we have talked about several times since we got hom. A friend who had lived and worked near the church and been a part of the community recommended we go to the church. I didn't know what to expect and was surprised to find the houses over the graves. Some were in disrepair, some were new, many were taken care of by their loved ones. Some were simple and some were elaborate. The museum was closed the day we were there and I had so many questions about the history and about some of the graves.
MoreThis was an interesting stop along our way back to Anchorage. It was surprising to see the colorful little structures over the graves and learn about this tradition. Unfortunately the priest that usually gives tours was not available the afternoon we stopped.
MoreA wonderful visit to a spiritually restful place. Just off the Glenn Highway but seemingly frozen in time from a century ago.
MoreWe noted this online as a local point of interest while returning from Homer to Anchorage. It's off the highway and hard to find. It's a small, single-story structure with some interesting architectural elements. There was no evidence you could access the interior. Because it took only a moment to view, it was OK. However, definitely wouldn't take the time to visit again.
