We arrived with great expectations for a stay in the wilderness of Alaska. We purchased a fishing license anticipating great fishing and wild life viewing. After a short float plane flight from Anchorage via Lake Clark we arrived to find a small lodge on the banks of a very small lake. Our very basic cabin had a very uncomfortable bed, no running water or toilet and was chilly with no firewood to light the fire. There was only one building in the complex which had a single shower and toilet in it but alas no hot water until the system was lit later in the day. I found this unacceptable and inadequate for multiple guests. Who wants to walk quite a distance to the toilet in the middle of the night when there are meant to be bears around. Jeff the owner was very nice and accommodating but notified us on arrival that the food had not arrived on the plane as expected but he did scratch up an reasonable meal. The next day my husband (an experienced fly fisherman) rowed from one end of the small lake to the other and up the tributaries and saw very little sign of any life in the lake at all. Jeff took me from one end of the lake to the other in his small boat and we again saw very little sign of fish or any other wildlife. Coming from New Zealand where there are so many economical cabins and lodges and so many lakes to fish in we found Little Mulchatna very disappointing. The cost of the return flight there from Anchorage was over NZ$2000. We checked out the second day after pre-paying our accommodation for 5 days as it was so disappointing. We did not see a bear or any other wild life there except for some birds and the odd salmon at the far end of the lake. On our return journey we met numerous people who had been fishing at Lake Clarke and caught so may fish they returned most of them to the lake. If you are after wild like viewing and good fishing there are better choices available without the expensive flights and substandard accommodation.

I found the Little Mulchatna on trip advisor after looking at countless fishing lodges last summer. I was trying to book a place for late September for our 10 year anniversary. This place is amazing. We were the last guests of the season so it was just us and Jeff. The weather was sunny and warm and perfect. I'm sure Jeff was a bit sad at the thought of having to close the place for the season. I know I'd be! We fished, kayaked, fished some more, hung out the lodge, ate tons and had zero schedule. With kids back in Portland, the luxury of having zero schedules is almost sinful. The flights were great. All the trip planning with Jeff and Glen at Lake Clarke went smoothly. We still think of this place all the time and how wonderful and cozy our cabin on the lake was. I wouldn't have changed a thing- except maybe not having wood stove failures early in the morning and setting off our smoke alarm twice... but that was all user error! Fish trap lake is a fisherman's paradise and the surrounding area is just beautiful. We can only hope to repeat the trip someday. It was truly spectacular.

This beautiful place of peace is a dream come true. The hosts, Jeff, Eli and Connie, were topnotch. The food was great. The fishing was incredible. We hiked, boated, fished, kayaked. Rustic and wonderful. I would come every year if I could. I have but one word for you...GO! Do it. You will not regret it.

I was fortunate to visit the Little Mulchatna Lodge in August 2014. The 2 flights going southwest out of Anchorage were breathtaking. We few over mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, small villages, and the rustic beauty that is Alaska. I spent 3 1/2 days at the lodge and wish I could have stayed longer. The cabins are just about perfect- several beds with lush down blankets and a wood stove for heat. The food is great. Jeff prepares all the food from scratch and no one should ever be hungry. I enjoyed the best fishing of my life on Fishtrap Lake and the Little Mulchatna River. Did I say I loved the fishing? We went hiking and kayaking as well. Jeff and his family go out of their way to provide that once in a lifetime experience that I hope to experience again.

7 of us from Aspen In October (John Denver Remembrance Week) ventured to Little Mulchatna for the Summer Solstice, June 19-23, 2012. This adventure was like no other I've had before! So peaceful and serene. We were completely off the grid! Fishing, cruising on Lake Clark, relaxing, enjoying good company, home-style cooking, enjoying magnificent scenery and sunrises ans sunsets (no darkness!) ... great! Welcoming the resident wildlife - a black bear who came to join us for coffee one morning, an eagle who came for his daily fish, and so many others - also amazing! Jeff and his son Eli were gracious, knowledgeable, and entertaining hosts. There are three lodging cabins - each with bunks/beds, shelves, and a wood-burning stove; a Bathhouse - toilet, sink, shower, hot water tank, and washer; and the main lodge - kitchen, dining area, living area with library. All blend gently into the pristine forest. Our many, many photos cannot fully capture the experience we had during our five days in the SW Alaskan wilderness. We WILL go back!
