In September 2025, my wife and I, both in our 60s, took on the challenge of hiking the Flattop Mountain Trail. As first-time hikers of this trail, we wanted to share our honest experience and advice for anyone considering this adventure, especially those in a similar age group or with limited hiking experience.Reaching the trailhead is straightforward and hassle-free. However, one crucial detail to keep in mind is that there is no cell phone signal at the trailhead parking lot. If you need to communicate with anyone before setting out, do so before you arrive. The cell signal only returns about halfway up the trail, so plan accordingly. Additionally, if you’re relying on GPS navigation via your iPhone or Android device for your return trip, be sure to download all necessary maps ahead of time, as they won’t work at the parking lot due to lack of service.A self-help kiosk is available at the trailhead where you can purchase a $5/day parking ticket. There are also restroom facilities, making it convenient for pre-hike preparations. The Flattop Mountain Trail can be divided into four distinct sections, each with its own unique challenges:1. First Quarter: The trail starts with well-groomed, wide paths. The terrain is either flat or gently ascending, making for a comfortable beginning.2. Second Quarter: This segment becomes noticeably steeper and features many wooden steps. Unfortunately, most of these steps are in poor condition, increasing the risk of tripping or slipping. Extra caution is advised.3. Third Quarter: The trail shifts into a steep rock scramble. The absence of trail markers makes navigation difficult. Up close, many paths appear to be part of the trail, but can actually lead you into unsafe terrain. It’s easy to stray from the main route here, so staying alert is essential.4. Final Quarter: The last leg is the steepest and most demanding, continuing through the rock scramble. All the difficulties of the previous section are amplified, with even greater steepness and no clear trail markings. From start to finish, the hike took us over five hours to complete and safely return. The lack of well-marked trails made the descent significantly more difficult than it needed to be. Fortunately, the weather was mostly rain-free during our hike, but it was still quite cold and extremely windy—conditions that added to the challenge. Some advice for Future Hikers• Prepare for Limited Connectivity: Download maps and communicate with others before reaching the trailhead.• Expect Varied Trail Conditions: Be ready for everything from easy walking to difficult rock scrambling.• Safety First: The combination of steep sections, ill-maintained steps, and unmarked trails makes this hike risky, especially for those who aren’t experienced hikers or in good physical condition.• Weather Awareness: Dress in layers and prepare for wind and cold, even on rain-free days. While the Flattop Mountain Trail offers beautiful scenery and a true sense of accomplishment, it is not for the faint of heart. If you lack hiking experience, physical fitness, or a touch of adventurous spirit, this trail may be best avoided. For those who are up for the challenge, thorough preparation and caution are key to making the most of your hike and ensuring a safe return.

Before deciding on whether to hike Flattop Mountain or not, I searched reviews, comments and trail information, because doing such a hike was all new to us. But my son and I took up the challenge. We lucked out on the clear, warm day, though it did rain a little bit for a few minutes. The place was easy to get to via a Lyft ride and the scenery was breathtaking, most especially at the summit. There were many other hikers, but definitely not enough to crowd the trails. As beginners, we made several rests along the way to catch our breaths or take photos. The final climb to the top was truly the most difficult as many people have commented; it is a steep, rocky climb with no set pathway. You find your own path based on your physical abilities. Yes, the body ached afterward but this hike made for a memorable accomplishment.

You might think that the way up is easier than the way down, Nope! You will use muscles you did not know you had to go back down. Iphone counted as 110 floors. Make sure to take some water, maybe something to eat. And take a picture by the flag pole.

Once you get into the parking lot, there are two different trails that you can take. The first is a half mile loop that overlooks the Anchorage bowl and the cook inlet. This is a easy walk and is handicap accessible. The second trail is a hike to the top of the mountain. It can take several hours to reach the top but, once you do, the view is magnificent. Make sure to get your five dollar parking pass at the self serve kiosk.

This was a short and step hike. Unfortunately we did not get to see views from the top as clouds came in about half way up. The locals race up and sometimes straight up but don’t feel shame in taking the switchbacks. This is a lung burner. It took us about 60 min to the top. Great views when not obstructed by clouds as we did see some of Cook Inlet on the way down. Beautiful flowers!
