Great stop on our way from Seward to Palmer. Interesting information on the Alaska railroad. The building has been preserved and restored, showcasing the living conditions and lifestyle of the railroad workers during that time. The Potter Section House was originally constructed in the early 1900s as part of the Alaska Railroad infrastructure. It served as a residence for the railroad section foreman and his family. The avalanche snow removal engine was unique.

Headquarters of Chugach State Park. Limited hours because of state budget cuts. But has outdoor interests, like a HUGH snow blower for train tracks. Address s/b 18625 Seward Highway, Anchorage. it is just south of town on the right side of the road.

After driving past this many times I finally stopped with my kids (both a bit train-obsessed!) to check it out. The section house itself wasn't open but walking around there are many signs detailing what everything there was, from the garden to the outlying buildings and sheds. There is and old section car that can be climbed on, as well as train wheels to climb on, an old track switch and other railroad items. There is a huge snowplow engine that was in use up until the 1980's to clear avalanches off the tracks and that in itself is worth the stop to see! There is another car to look at that used to be a WWII soldier transport. Neither of the trains are open to go inside. There are large informational signs about the snowplow, including photos of it in use and information about the people who ran the railroad as well. I'm glad we stopped, my kids enjoyed running around and looking at everything. I hope they put some work into this stop as it has a lot of potential. There is ample parking and the restrooms were very clean, a sign that not many people stop here.

Just a few pieces of equipment and a sign with a breif history. It took longer for us to find than to tour.
