Originally built in 1852, the Latimer House is a beautifully preserved example of the opulent, Italianate architectural style favored by the well-to-do merchants of the Victorian era. The house appears frozen in time, furnished with over 600 relics including the original chandeliers, jewelry, artwork, photographs and furniture. The house was built upon a symmetrical design with rich architectural details and intricate embellishments that reflect the high-brow taste of its original owners. Today, Latimer House is home to the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, and is operated as a house museum and event venue. The house is sheltered from the modern world by lace brick and stucco walls, nestled at the heart of a splendid garden, rife with flowering plants and charm. Guided tours of the house are offered from Monday through Saturday for a small fee.

tripadvisorI live in Wilmington and this is the best experience of history in Wilmington. I think my tour guide lived in the house in the past and came back to give tours. He knew so many details about the family, the house and the times from the past.
MoreWe went on a Saturday night “gaslight “ tour which was very interesting. However, we were told to exit by the front steps which were poorly lit. I was unable to see the last few steps and feel on my hands and knees. I received severe abrasions to my knees and hands. The staff provided basic first aid. I contacted the management and they referred me to the board president. He took over a week to respond back.
MoreA well preserved family home. The docent was very personable and informative. I will return for some of their events which sound amazing.
MoreWe attended the “gaslight” tour Saturday night. It was interesting to see what the low light was like inside the house, history of the house and family. we had to leave by the front steps which were poorly lit and unfortunately, I fell down them. They need better lighting on the front steps and the side of the house to walk around to the back of it. The rear of the house is well lit.
MoreI enjoy touring historic homes, and this one is particularly good detailing the fortunes of one family. My guide emphasized the social history of the owners and offspring (4 of 9 made it to adulthood). They were slave owners until emancipation. They were entrepreneurs and civic leaders. Their story lends itself to understanding broad themes in Southern Living.
