tripadvisorIt's been many years since I last saw Adobe Walls. I was part of the archeological dig done at the Walls back in the 70's by the Panhandle Plains Museum at Canyon, in conjunction with what is now Texas A&M University West Texas. I spent many weeks at the Walls. It was truly a wonderful and inspiring experience. In those days you could literally feel the history, as if you were some sort of time traveler. What have these people done? How could this have happened to such a marvelous piece of history?Adobe Walls has been all but destroyed by what I assume was the owners of the Turkey Track Ranch. It's almost a crime. It is without a doubt, sad.
MoreSad. After reading the post by Hart from Dallas I had to see for myself.I too grew up on a ranch in the Texas Panhandle. I visited the Walls site many times over the years. Hart, you are correct, the Walls site has been destroyed. The energy that once was there is gone, along with the view.Whoever manages or owns the Turkey Track ranch now, has done their very best to erase a large and great piece of Texas history. If you are a Texas history buff and plan to visit the Walls, don't waist your time.
MoreWHAT A TRAVISTY. I grew up on a ranch just a few miles west of Adobe Walls. My first trip to the walls was in 1955 ( I was five). Adobe Walls was always a place of a very special energy. The first people, who often visited the site always told me it was a place of Strong Magic.I had not been to the walls since 95. So on a trip to Angel Fire, NM last week I and friends decided to make a pilgrimage to the sacred spot. I could not believe what I found. The once open and serene Adobe Walls battle site in now crisscrossed with fences, cattle guards and extremely MEAN SPIRRITED warning sings. The place was extremely overgrown and worst of all, someone had put a fence, cattle guard and sign threatening punishment to anyone setting foot on Turkey Track Ranch land right next to William Olds grave ( Olds was killed in the second battle of Adobe Walls and buried where he fell).I once knew the owners of The Turkey Track. I assume a new regime has taken over. You people should be ashamed of what you have done. For those of you thinking of visiting the Walls, don't waist your time. THE MAGIC IS GONE.
MoreNo problem finding it, we came in from the north from Spearman on highway 207 headed towards Stinnett. There'll be a little green sign along the highway that'll say Adobe Walls and pointing south. If you miss the first one there will be a second one a few miles down the highway. Just follow the road and the occasional signs and keep going, you'll be on the Turkey Track Ranch, cross a few cattle guards, the road turns to gravel, then pavement, then back to gravel to the end. It's a good road in dry weather. Fantastic piece of old west history! Read the story about the 1874 fight ahead of time and you'll understand what took place there better. Nothing there but the two monuments and Billy Dixon's grave. The country is virtually unchanged from what it was back then. We ate our picnic lunch out of the back of the car while we were there and just enjoyed and soaked it all in! Well worth the time to go to it.
MoreI had people tell me not to bother with the Battle of Adobe Walls site. After all, there's not much there to see, and it's difficult to get to. But oh, the history that is here! True, there is not much to see as far as ruins. But there are some monuments, and the desolation helps to bring the history to life. And yes, it's difficult to get to, but if you find the right map, it's a lot easier. I used information obtained on the Hutchinson County Museum website. They have driving instructions and a map of Adobe Walls that are very accurate and useful. It's a long way off of the beaten path, but the roads are generally good. If you're a history buff, and are familiar at all with the 2nd Battle of Adobe Walls, it's well worth the time and effort to visit this site.
