tripadvisorWe were able to view the museum in the Carriage house, but that's it. The Victorian Cottage was closed and is only open on certain days. Call ahead if you want to view that. The volunteers were very friendly . It had small sections about the history of the area, the lilac parade and crowning the queen/ princess as well as some minimal high school items and pictures of how it used to be.. They did have a good section about the Little Orphan Annie original comic, dollhouse and info on the Annie movies. I hoped they would have more about the theatre or the old marquee sign, but they only had a seat, 2 photos and a single letter. I felt that they could have had more to view, considering the history of Lombard. Overall it was enjoyable, but I don't know if I would go out of my way to specifically visit. Definitely a one and done kind of place.
MoreSheldon Peck, a self-taught artist, did portraits to make a living. But my interest in his homestead was that it was a stop on the underground railroad that helped slaves to freedom. The day I went, there was an exhibition of his painting from his early days in Vermont to his time Illinois. Folk art in style, the faces are really great. The museum, in his restored house, is small and full of character. This is really a unique place that is especially great to bring kids to.
MoreVisit to learn about this itinerant artist who became famous in his time as both a painter and an abolitionist.Lombard was an important spot on the Underground Railroad, a surprising fact to most. The local historical society has done a remarkable job in setting up the exhibits- they have a core of hard working docents who make this all work.
MoreLearn about the role our area played in the Underground Railroad at this former homestead of the progressive Peck family. View the Peck artwork (originals coming soon). This is the oldest home in Lombard. Excellent docent.
