A unique natural phenomenon located in the Shale Creek Preserve, the Eternal Flame Falls is a popular tourist attraction. A quaint grotto at the base of the waterfall known to emit natural gas, is lit to produce a small flame which can burn throughout the year. Easily extinguished, the flame is re-ignited by park authorities for a continuous display of the spectacle. This extraordinary attraction has featured in many books and travel series on television. Located inside the Chestnut Ridge Park, the Eternal Flame Falls is a must visit!

tripadvisorA friend had the Eternal Flame Hike on her bucket list, so we decided to go—and it absolutely lived up to the hype.It was easy to find and had plenty of parking. I read reviews beforehand and felt well prepared, and I’d agree: this is a moderate hike. You start by heading down the stairs, then follow the trail (look for the flame markers posted along the way). The path runs through a ravine, so expect to get your feet a bit wet. We went the day after a heavy rainfall and were still able to carefully hop across rocks with only minimal soaking. You’ll also need to step over/under a few downed trees and navigate around some roots and embankments—nothing too difficult, but it’s worth noting if you have mobility concerns. The scenery is beautiful, and seeing the flame tucked behind the waterfall is a really memorable payoff. On the way back up, the stairs are spaced with little “scenic overlook” pull-offs, which is great for taking a quick breather without blocking others on the steps.Overall, a fantastic hike and a must-do if you’re in the area—wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet and take your time on the rocky crossings.
MoreGlad I visited, but both my husband and I felt like we shouldn't have risked it.Many times, we had to choose between hilly narrow paths near a small cliff, and stepping on wet stones in the creek. We are both 67 years old and fit, but we can't afford to fall at our age.Wear comfortable shoes that can get muddy and wet.We found the (maybe 15?) flights of wood and mud steps to be manageable both on the way down to the flame and on the way back up, but we crossed paths with a younger, overweight person who found the climb back up challenging. The trail to the flame is very well-marked, numbered from 1-20, so it's difficult to get lost.Port-a-potty in the Eternal Flame parking lot; no thank you. This is a very large park; there might be a normal restroom in another section of the park. If you don't see the sign for Eternal Flame Parking Lot, you're in the wrong section of the park. We're glad we brought water bottles on this hike. It is supposedly only .56 miles in each direction, but much uphill walking and many flights of stairs. Almost completely shaded by trees.
MoreWe as a couple however there were some families on the hike. Grounds are muddy and also unsteady and uneven must be careful with children. Shoes will get wet and dirty so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. Beautiful scenery beautiful hike would do it again’
MorePotentially a difficult hike for some. Very short, and quick, but lots of stairs and towards the bottom the trail gets questionable with lots of rocks and follows a river that if is high water at all, the path would definitely be wet or underwater. Worth the awesome views of waterfalls and the flame! Lots of free parking and easy to find.
MoreBeautiful hidden away waterfall with the eternal flame within it. It is not a bad hike back to the falls but wear comfortable water shoes as you may get wet wading through very thin water.
