Jefferson's Academical Village Building

Recognized the world over as Jefferson's most distinguished architectural achievement, the Academical Village continues to serve as the core of the modern-day University of Virginia. Designed entirely by the former US President, the Village is much more than a collection of buildings, but rather, it is an embodiment of Jefferson's vision of the ideal learning environment and what he envisaged for the new American republic. The Village is centered around a spacious, terraced lawn, at the north end of which stands the iconic Rotunda. Originally modeled after the Pantheon, the Rotunda was gutted by an electrical fire in 1895, yet remains the centerpiece of the monumental design of the Village. On the east and west, the Lawn is hemmed by 10 Pavilions, student residences and gardens, separated by Jeffersonian Serpentine Walls, each with a unique design of its own. The south end was left open to a sprawling view of the fields to represent Jefferson's dream of a republic anchored by agricultural pursuits, while to the North the Rotunda represents knowledge. The buildings themselves are a spectacular example of Neoclassical design that are unique and highly personalized renditions, representing Jefferson's ideals. Together with Monticello, the Academical Village has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
