tripadvisorI was out for a long walk down Virginia Street on a cold day and I passed by this little park and memorial. It is important to memorialize veterans and fallen soldiers. This memorial is modest, understated, not especially pretty.
MoreAccording to the Reno Historic Preservation Society the park was named after C. C. Powning, an influential resident of Washoe County at that time. Presently the park has on display a statue of General Jesse Reno, flags of all military services, the ship's bell from the USS Reno, a Freedom Flame, and a monument to Nevada soldiers killed in the War on Terror. General Jesse Lee Reno happens to also be the namesake of Reno, Nevada, and the general was known for fighting alongside the men he commanded. The ship's bell of the USS Reno is prominently featured at the center of the military flag display. The War on Terror monument honors Nevada's fallen service members who have sacrificed their lives. This location is near the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts and a lovely little memorial for our service members. This is part of the Blue Star Memorial By-Way. These are highways within the United States that are marked and pay tribute to the United States military. The blue star was used on service flags to denote a service member fighting in the war. The program has since been expanded to include Memorial Markers and Memorial By-ways. These markers are used in National Cemeteries, parks, veterans facilities, and gardens. The upkeep of the park was well noted and while I sat for a few moments to decide where next to go on my walking trip through Reno downtown, I noticed several people taking advantage of the park and it’s seating. This memorial park is Nicely located and a lovely memorial to the people who have served our country and to those specifically in Reno.
MoreThis small park pays tribute to those locals who have given their lives serving this country. All wars we have been involved in are represented. Statues and plaques are tastefully positioned around the park/memorial. Unfortunately, names continue to be added.
MoreSmall downtown park near the city municipal buildings and library, along Virginia Street. OK for a quick visit.
MoreThis is nice reminder of the past and the present heroes who died during all wars. It's good that in the middle of the gambling city, someone has found spot to memorize the history and pay respect to the fallen. RomanP
