This 106 acre conservation easement just outside Troutville is open to the public at no charge due to the generosity of the people who own it also live on the property. There are a number of trails, although they were out of maps, so bring your phone to snap a picture of the trail guide. Bird feeders abound, so this is a great place for bird watching. You can also enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the benches or the picnic table. We found some of the trails hard to follow in February with so many leaves on the ground, so were unable to get to the hawk watching platform, but we look forward to going back in another season.

Whether you want to just stretch your legs, have a picnic in the garden, hike through the woods, or park yourself on a platform with binoculars to site birds, this is a hidden gem off highways 11 and Interstate 81. This is a private property open to the public, so be sure to follow the guidelines listed in the trail maps provided near the garden. Don't bring domesticated animals here (like your dogs or cats). Geocaching is allowed. Woodpecker Ridge Nature Center is made up of more than 100 acres on a conservation easement. You'll spot a variety of butterflies, wildflowers, and birds! Bird houses and feeders abound and trails are marked. A brief walk out to the Hawkwatch platform with binoculars will often reward you with breath taking views of redtailed hawks and turkey vultures in flight. Your ears will welcome the chatter, song, and caws of the various birds in the brush. Walking the trails in spring you'll spot wildflowers. Summer is delightful as the garden comes to life and the birds burst in song. As you walk through the woods in the fall, be sure to pass by the Big Oaks area, and revel in the crunch of the thickest natural bed of leaves mother nature can provide. A word to the wise, carry sunscreen and water. Bring your binoculars and your camera - with a long range lens if you have one. And remember the bug spray!! Before you tromp through any woods or grass in any natural setting, be sure to spray your shoes and pant legs to help prevent ticks from being attracted to you. Yes, always wear pants, even in the summer ladies! You don't want to end up with lyme disease! Also, be sure to pack out your trash. Back to this Woodpecker Ridge Nature Center: It's quiet and lovely. You can spend a few minutes here or pack a lunch and be here the whole day. It opens at 6 am and closes at 6 pm.
