tripadvisorWent looking for Apple Snail shells & birds... found a ton of the shells, but very few birds. Of course going at the hottest part of the day at the end of August/beginning of September probably didn't help -- the creatures had better sense than we did. Definitely not a place to venture alone as it is remote. Want to visit again at a different time of year & day to see all the birds others have seen.
MoreReally enjoy visiting this place. Always lots of wildlife from birds to alligators. Also a great place to photograph the wildlife. Lots of sandhill cranes. You can walk/run around the entire area so a great place to exercise. Dogs are welcome if on leash and you pickup after them. Parking is free also, it is a dirt parking lot. No public restrooms. Highly recommend for nature lovers.
MoreOur 2 1/2 hour walk, binoculars and tall water bottle full in hand, at this serene natural habitat was relaxing and hot with outdoor temps being 77 degrees & sunny by the time we left. No benches & occasional tree shade throughout this flat dirt/grass/stone terrain. No spoonbills but we had the pleasure of seeing snail kites and swallowtail kites + turkey vultures, red shouldered hawk, osprey, limpkins, belted kingfishers, anhingas, double breasted cormorants, white and glossy ibis’, sand hill cranes with babies, great blue, tri-colored, little blue & green herons, snowy egret, great & cattle egrets, common morhens, purple gallinules, pied billed grebes, blue winged teal, american coots, black ducks, northern shovelers, palm warblers, blue gray gnatcatcher, boat tailed grackles & grey crested flycatcher.
MoreVisited on a week day morning. Only walked part of the trail but very beautiful. There were a variety of herons, egrets, turtles, hawks, eagles, etc. A few locals were fishing but very few people. I will return but will bring binoculars since some of the wildlife is beyond a camera unless it is a long telephoto. The trail road near the entrance had maintenance crews working to maintain so it was a bit noisy and my bet is there would be more birds when they are finished. No facilities and could use a few benches to stop and view the beauty.
MoreI really like Harns Marsh for walking and birding. It's a beautiful, serene place alive with bird song. Yesterday's walk was exceptionally nice. There was no discernable signs that a hurricane had come through, even fewer people than ever walking around, and a plethora of species easily seen. As hot as it was, there was a breeze coming through the marsh and the hour and a half I spent was most comfortable. For whatever reasons, Harns Marsh does not seem to attract as many birders as other sites in SWFL, mostly local fishermen who are quiet and polite.Yesterday I not only spotted Sandhill Cranes, Palm Warblers and Little Blue Herons, but on other occassions have seen Snail Kites, Scissor-tailed Kites and Limpkins. It's a wonderful place with easy, free parking. No amenities but peace, calm and nature are enough for me.
