tripadvisorYou really get the sense of a place when you slow down and visit one of these community museums. The docents want to communicate about their community and you get a real sense of the place. My brother used to live in Stanton but I’d ever been to Scio.
MoreMy husband and I recently toured the Scio Museum. As the curator and two docents walked us through, we were overcome by the sense of community found there. The locals are still understandably proud of the small town's major industrial roots, and of the few amazing residents who during their lifetimes achieved a measure of greatness. Their stories are intriguing, and I highly recommend this museum as a destination in your near future. Appointments are necessary.Kathleen Horn/curator of the McCook House Museum
MoreA very long and interesting history going back to when the first settlers came to Oregon, and met the local tribes. Donated items from the families going back generations. Photos, stories, and people still here to tell stories that have 2nd hand accounts of stories from the original pioneers. There is much information from first hand accounts and stories from the first settlers. It is a very small building and full of facts and items. I live nearby, and my home is 100 years old as in a couple of the photos in the history book here, of course my home has been upgraded over the years but the original photo is there. I can't say it is for large groups and such because it is a tiny building and not enough room for lots of people, but it well maintained and lots of stories to fire the imagination of historic facts about the area. It is only open in late spring through late summer.
MoreI've met with the folks that work here at the historical society. It is a really neat place, as it is full of donated items from times past. Scio itself has a very interesting story as to its origins and bears study. Lots of neat items, especially for those genealogical hunters (family bibles, etc.) Small, but lots to see and the wealth of information that it's members can tell you, well, will have you listening for a long time.
MoreWe live in Scio and really enjoy visiting this museum periodically as they get new pictures and information about the past history of our area. Volunteers are very helpful and some are the ancestors of some of the original homesteaders who came out on the old Oregon Trail.
