tripadvisorDowntown Syracuse is interesting. The buildings around Clinton Square are older, with lots of character. In Clinton Square is a memorial to a black man's rescue, William Jerry Henry. Syracuse was a hotbed of anti-slavery sentiment at the time, so his rescue by many in the community became publicly known, and years later, this memorial statue was erected commemorating this event.
MoreA significant sculture recognizing citizens refusing to allow captured slaves to be returned to their owners. This set a path of resistance to slavery by common citizens. The history behing the sculture is the most significant take away.
MoreGreat memorial to the rescue of Jerry. A fugitive slave that was rescued from jail and taken to Canada to freedom.
MoreThis is a stunning and heartfelt sculpture that tells an important story of one of the first freed men after slavery and his recapture on behalf of a federal government out of touch with the state of New York. Worth a visit.
MoreThe monument is not well advertised except during black history month it's pretty easy to miss. Just look for the war monument and take a walk around the square. It's on the far end in front of the old post office. I highly recommend a visit
