tripadvisorMy watchband broke during a recent visit to St. Augustine. We were staying in the historic district and didn't have a car, so our choices were slim to none. I stopped in by chance at Myers, a small house in the heart of the historic district, and Leonard, the owner, was incredibly helpful. Leonard has limited space but a wide assortment of items like watch bands. He had my sports watch band in one of his many little drawers and repaired my watch right away as we chatted about the town. He seemed to know everybody and everything. As he worked on my watch, locals popped in to chat and it became obvious that Leonard's shop was the social center of the community. He told me some wonderful stories and I met some eccentric folks and their dogs. The cost for the band and the repair was ridiculously cheap, and I even tipped him -- something I have never done in a gift shop before. He said that he would give it to the homeless shelter. My wife stopped by after I told her about the shop and Leonard replaced a silver fitting on her earrings. Leonard also sells unique jewelry made by local artisans, some of which are really unique and reasonably priced. In the midst of all the tourist trap stores, selling Chinese junk, Myers is an oasis of small town convenience and friendly assistance. For more travel tips, please check out my popular travel blog.
