To correct some of the below reviews: McHugh Creek is a parking area off the Seward Highway where you can access a couple of trails. You could go up McHugh Peak from there if you are prepared for a long, steep, 4000+ ft ascent. To access McHugh Peak, I started at the Honey Bear trailhead in the Bear Valley area of the Hillside in Anchorage. This is a 2200+ 5.5ish mile in and out hike. The reviews on All Trails are accurate. It is steep, rugged, and requires trekking poles, good shoes, water, and stamina. The views are excellent, the area gorgeous, and it’s totally worth it.

Climbed McHugh Peak on a wet day in July. Fog obscured most of the view, but the climb was still amazing. It is steep, so be ready to exercise your calves on the downhill return. The ridgeline has spectacular sweeping views to both sides of the valleys. The difference in from one side to the others is very clear: avalanche damage and wind-blown rocky areas on the wind-swept side versus lush green and thick foliage on the protected side. The views of the Anchorage city bowl are definitely photo-worthy! Warning: There are only SIX legal parking spots on the Bear Valley side, so arrive early and ENJOY!

McHugh Creek is just off the highway. Bring a bear bell and beware moose as this 5-6 mile round trip moderate hiking trail is often (at least once a month) closed due to wildlife in the area. Check before you go! BEAUTIFUL views. Great trail. Lots of up and down.

I am giving this attraction a low review if you decide to drive to it. There is a 5-6 mile hike from McHugh Creek on Seward Highway if you want to do it. Now coming back to the drive dont do it. The road is very bad. It is not paved. It gets bad as you reach the peak. We decided to not risk our car in the dirt road as there were too many stones. If you have a car good for off road driving then you can drive all the way. My experience was not great. I am sure some folks will have a wonderful experience when they get there but I couldn't get there.

There is an interesting nature area and a nice view. Good place to start a day hike along Turnagain Arm trails.
