I went a couple days ago with my dog. It was raining and there wasn’t a single soul there. While we were at the very top taking a breather my dog got away from me and headed past the pumpkin rock. I saw the top of a coyote heading towards my dog. I called for him but instead of coming to me he went towards the coyote. I couldn’t see what happened but my dog yelped, scared. He made his way back to me and I grabbed his leash and started back down, scared. The coyote did not follow us but watched us from up on top of the mountain. I walked fast, looking up and making sure he was still up there. He was crouching and all I could see was his head. He finally stood up straight and I saw his chest and head but from far away. I managed to get all the way down all the while keeping an eye on him just in case he decided to come after us. He never did but now I’m scared to go back alone.

Pumpkin Rock Trail was the perfect jumpstart to getting back into hiking after being way out of shape. I needed something doable but still challenging — and this trail delivered. It’s short and sweet, but don’t let that fool you — the incline will get your heart going, especially if you haven’t hit a trail in a while. The loop is around 1.5 to 1.7 miles round trip with some steep and loose dirt paths. What I liked most was the flexibility: you can take it slow, go your own pace, and even split off in different directions depending on your energy level. It’s a forgiving trail that still makes you feel like you got a legit workout. At the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of Norco and, of course, the big ol’ pumpkin — a massive jack-o’-lantern painted boulder that’s both random and kind of awesome. It’s a great photo spot and surprisingly chill to hang out at for a few minutes before heading back down.

I attempted to ride this on a 1300 watt mountain ebike using the right hand, and supposedly easier trail, and it is a very steep and difficult climb. Eventually gave up on it. Lots of rain ruts and slippery areas. Definitely a “hiking only” area.

Vandals have put their marks on the rock. Found parking at the base near housing and did not start in nearby park. Steep climb for old guys like us, should have brought hiking stick to help up and down. Huffed and puffed our way up and used weeds on side to get down to stop slipping. Great views from above of the Norco area. Worth the effort to see the rock and the view. Please do not bring paint to put your mark.

Looking for some place new to hike, was informed of “The Pumpkin Rock Trail.” Figured I give it a try. Pumpkin Rock Trail is a 3.2 mile moderately trafficked loop trail with an altitude of 672 feet located near Norco, California. The trail follows a ridge starting at the top of Vandermolen Drive and is rated moderate for all skill levels. The crowning jewel of the trail is the large boulder at the top painted orange and black to resemble a large Halloween pumpkin. As one heads up the trail you will find several spots that are covered in loose gravel and are extremely slippery. Be sure that you have good shoes or hiking boots on. Water and a hat are a must have requirement for this hike. Noted several hikers on the trail, most were not wearing mask nor practicing social distancing. If you are observant you might be able to locate a wide range of different animals (i.e., snakes, coyotes, tarantulas and variety of birds along the trail). Sadly, the rocks and the trail are littered with broken glass bottles, beer cans and trash. One you reach the top of the trail; the Pumpkin Rock is also covered in graffiti and the surrounding area littered with trash. Nice beautiful views of the surrounding hills and a great opportunity to get a bit of exercise. Unfortunately, the graffiti and trash has ruined this hiking trail. Most definitely will not be returning.
