tripadvisorLast names on the graves are mostly Frierson, McQueen, Whitfield, Craft, Thigpen, and Kellar. Dates aren't chronological at all - fresh graves next to ones a hundred years old.

MoreTurtleskin Cemetery runs alongside Mississippi Highway 607 for just over 1/4 mile. It is a very old cemetery - the oldest grave marker death date I noticed was 1850. One of the markers mentions the deceased as having been in the Indian War of 1836 and the Confederate War. However, there are many modern grave markers there, as well, and in some cases new markers have been set for very old graves as replacements. It is anything but abandoned; there are numerous fresh flowers there indicating a number of people still visit. Sadly, it isn't as well maintained as one might wish, but still not too bad. There are 2 openings with chain link fence gates in the concrete barrier separating the cemetery from the road - one toward either end of the cemetery. This cemetery originally served the town of Santa Rosa before it was taken over by the Stennis Space Center and the residents relocated in 1961. Take I-59 Nicholson Exit 1 / MS Highway 607. Take MS 607 S.E. 5 miles toward Stennis Space Center. Turtleskin Cemetery on right side of road.
MoreThis cemetary is in the Stennis Space center Buffer Zone. I have never written a review of a cemetary and probably never will again. Where to begin? it is quiet. :) Nobody complains. But seriously, this is a very old an unique cemetary. Families have their own plots and customize them. some have built little brick mausoleums. some have glow in the dark crosses on the graves. others have concrete borders around them. Thee seem sto be no perpetual care. I occasionally see people weeding or mowing, but I am pretty sure it is down to family members to do it. overall, it is very unkempt. I will say this, this cemetary has one of the scariest looking trees in it I have ever seen and that is in broad daylight. I think it would be very interesting to just walk through this cemetary and examine the old graverstones and plots. It is as unique as any...right down to its name.
MoreThis cemetery was first begun in the 1850s. There are many graves for early settlers. Last time I visited the grass was very high and looked unmaintained. I was surprised because I have been there many times through the years and it was always mowed and attractive. It is fenced with a cement block fence, just before you get to the MS test cite. If you have ancestors in the area, you need to check out this cemetery
