tripadvisorAfter self-touring Presidio De San Saba, my husband and I toured historic downtown Menard. There were many historic buildings and the Historic Ditch Walk. We were not impressed with the Ditch Walk. There was no water in the ditch (in late May). The weeds were tall around half of the ditch walk. The entire ditch had tall weeds. The water paddle wheel was interesting. There were some benches but too many weeds. The ditch walk could be a good destination if cleaned up. A good mowing and some flowers would help.
Morehas small restored but poorly maintained ditch along Ditch street in town, rumors that it usually flows but unconfirmed, ... would be great to have access to the diversion dam 5 miles up stream as part of a Presidio de San Saba visit and would be nice to have a small restored garden to show how the irrigation water had been used (would make nice community garden with produce a local group could provide to local widows and fund ditch upgrade and maintance
MoreIt's not always like this, bummer that it was so dry and there was weed growth above your waist so it had to have been like this for a season. I'm sure it's great when there's water. They spend a lot on maintaining the San Saba river parks, should spend some money on getting water into this place.
MoreThe 10 mile long Ditch was constructed in the 1870s to provide water for farmers and gristmill wheels, and same dam is still used today according to the historic sign. This is a very pretty, easy and quick place to make a brief stop, talk a walk, and learn some history. Once in Menard, signs direct you to the Ditch. I was there very early on sunny April day and no one else was around. Birds were singing, there was water in the ditch, and lots of wildflowers. I lingered a few extra minutes to enjoy the solitude and take in the beauty before continuing on Hwy 190 to Ft. McKavett. If you are in the area in the Spring, Hwy 190 is a great place to see wildflowers and is not busy.
MoreWe stopped here for about 5 minutes to look at the historical marker and ditch. The ditch looks like the irrigation canals fed by the aqueducts in San Antonio. A fast, easy glimpse of early waterworks in Texas.
