tripadvisorWe were looking for something to do after landing in Anchorage and decided to drive to Thunderbird Falls. This was a fairly easy hike on a wide dirt path in the woods. There were a few places to stop if needed. There were some fairly steep hills on the path that had us 50 year old a little short of breath but overall a decent hike. Nice waterfalls at the end with a viewing platform and bench to sit on.
MoreEasy trail to a beautiful waterfall. Great for families. There is also an overlook to view the gorge. Would highly recommend.
MoreThe trail is not as easy as every one says, with multiple ups and downs, but it is a nice hike. The view of the falls from the overlook isn't that impressive. You can't get away from the persistent swarms of bugs, so bring bug spray, wear a hat, and keep your mouth closed. Pit toilets at trailhead, plenty of parking (pay at the machine, ticket good at other Alaska state parks that day).
MoreMy husband and I love a good waterfall hike, and this one did not disappoint. The walk itself is not terribly difficult, but the views at the end were amazing. There is an overlook where you can see the whole falls, but there is also another side path that takes you down by the creek. You can get much closer to the bottom of the falls for another perspective. I would highly recommend doing both!
MoreIt is a nice hike, however, it is not an easy hike. I saw a lot of past reviews that said it was an easy hike and one big hill then it's a level path. This is not the case. There are multiple hills and the view to the falls is ok. If you want to see the view in that are in pictures you need to go to the bottom which is a pretty significant hike. While we did not have a problem with this hike, some of my older family would have if they had come. My suggestion if you are not one for hiking or doing hills I would pass this up. We found the Fall Creek Trailhead a much nice waterfall. This one is located on Seward Highway and there is no hiking to get to it.
