tripadvisorIf you are into Route 66, this is a MUST see. John has managed to recreate or represent the best of route 66. It feels like a walk back in time visiting iconic places in route 66.
MoreJohn has quite an eclectic collection of Route 66 items, his own theater, rebuilt and hand built cars. it's a fantastic collection of memories and more. Take the time to visit with him and learn his fun story as well. This is what the Route 66 experience is all about!
MoreBe careful as you are driving to visit John's Place or you will probably miss it. Keep an eye out for the building with a car coming out of its side on the second story. Unfortunately, when we stopped, John was not around so it was all gated up. I am not sure if there are regular hours, or you just have to take a chance as you are driving by. You can see some things from the road (a Route 66 directional sign, some 2D car cutouts) and a few items out in the yard but your access will be restricted. It is also tricky to park if the entrance is not open. John does have his own Blue Whale like Catoosa's. Look for it out in a field up the road. It is hard to get close enough to take decent photos there, however. It is close to the Route 66 attractions in Arcadia (The Old Round Barn, Pops).
MoreMeeting and visiting with John made my day. He has such a wonderful collection of 66 memorabilia displayed throughout the building that it really takes time to absorb it all, and that time is well spent. Memories of are in each and every item. What a wonderful representation of America and the Mother Road.
MoreFound out about John’s Place thru Trip Advisor. What a Interesting place !My Husband and I got to meet John, he and my husband had a lot to talk about. John was in the aviation industry as is my husband. We also met two of his friends who happened to be visiting John when we arrived. His big pet Dog was actually rather calm, no barking or jumping on us. He enjoyed my husband petting him.Such eccentric things scattered all around the property. I found myself smiling often at seeing things that brought back childhood memories. Or seeing nostalgic things. We read about it being hard to find. So we were on the look out. FYI my GPS said it would be on the opposite side of the road. We passed it but we quickly turned around. At first we were a bit hesitant to walk up to the entrance area but heard people talking and we quickly were greeted and warmly welcomed by John. So happy we didn’t drive away. This was free to do, but John does have a donation box. Such historical items and info.We enjoyed stopping here and I took a ton of pictures. John had a Victory Speed limit sign and asked if we knew what it meant? He asked his male friend as well, none of us knew the answer.John taught us the 35 mph Victory Speed limit sign was a attempt to reduce gas consumption. The Government passed a mandatory wartime speed limit of 35 mph, known as the “Victory Speed”The place made me instantly think of the cable show American Pickers those guys would have loved all of John’s things and John’s personality. It was definitely so worth stopping.
