tripadvisorTrails not always clearly marked Except yellow Online map talks of blueberry & maple trails??
MoreI'm working from the 60 Hikes within 60 Miles book for New York City and it led me here. I was advised to try to work my way on the yellow trail west, aka the Yellow Birch Trail, and then come round the other side on the blue trail coming around northeast. The yellow trail was pretty clearly marked and I was able to get across west from the North St. lot to the Lake St. lot without much of any difficulty. Along that trail, there ain't much to look at, but at the same time, it is quiet. You don't hear any cars in the background, just crickets and a few birds. Coming back I got easily lost trying to follow the blue trail back east. At one point there's a fork in the trail and right in the middle is this laughably high up map that I swear is nailed like 15 FEET UP in a tree. Who the f**k thought that up? Thankfully I was able to grab one of the white trails south back to the Yellow Birch and then made my way back east to the North Street lot.Best features: bathroom in good condition right at the park entrance, and for the most part very gentle ground, not too rocky. Not too buggy either, minimum of mosquitoes today.
MoreNice rustic easy-ish hiking. As a first time visitor the signage was confusing (even the entrance was tricky) and the trail not well kept. Definitely detracted from experience!
MoreMy family is new to the Greenwich area and we are still exploring local nature preserves. Today it was in the 50s in February and while we love Tod's Point, we knew it would be very crowded and bottlenecked with cars so we checked out Babcock Preserve instead. While people are right when they say there aren't significant views to be had, it's a nice preserve with beginner to light moderate hiking (a little bit of some uphill scrambling) and there are about 7 miles of walking/hiking trails so there's quite a lot of choice for a smaller preserve. We hiked for about an hour and maybe saw about 40% of the whole preserve. Dogs are allowed here and we saw quite a few of them out and about (most were unleashed but my guess is they are supposed to stay leashed). I also recommend wearing hiking boots/shoes as some parts of the trails were very muddy and wet and would not be great if you are just wearing sneakers. Some people complained about the signage and I will agree it isn't always clear where to go and might take a few seconds to spot the next trail blaze if you get turned around a bit. I ended up taking a picture of the map at the trailhead entrance off of North Street before entering and I'm glad I did as the few other maps I did see out on the trails were very faded and impossible to read. I was able to refer to my photo of the map and make my way around the preserve very easily without getting lost. There were a few unmarked trails that did not show up on the map though and that was a bit confusing as I had no way of knowing where they went since they did not show up on the main map so I stuck to the marked ones. Would like to come back here at some point and do the whole main loop at some point. It's a nice preserve. :)
MoreI love jogging these trails or taking the dog for a beautiful walk among the endless trees. It's safe and a great escape from busy life if for only an hr.
