We enjoyed a very nice afternoon hiking in the Johns Mountain National Forest. The waterfalls were beautiful and since it is a loop we appreciate different ones, we read before that the flow and sizes of the falls depends on the rain, they were not “big” but beautiful anyway. We hiked all the way to the top of the mountain and enjoyed a fantastic view.

The hike up to Keown Falls this year is fantastic with the amount of rainfall the past few months. Not only is the main fall flowing, many smaller falls are cascading down the cliff side near the top.

OK, if you like to get rewarded with an awesome waterfall at the end of your hike, you may want to skip this one. However, if you are patient and wait until after a good rain and like to make some scenic photo stops along the way, then put this one on your list. When you leave the parking area on the trail it will fork where it will loop back. I recommend you take the right fork up AND back. The trail is much nicer and the views are awesome. The left loop is overgrown and if wet could be quite dangerous in spots. It does take you by a very small falls, but I mean very small. Trust me go to the right and come back that way. Also, on the way there or back by car take a side trip up to John's Mountain overlook. It is a bit of a trip on a narrow gravel road but take your time and you won't be disappointed in the least. You can see for miles and miles.

Fun little hike. I would say it's not good for those with knee problems, there are a lot of rocks on the trail, and it does get a little tricky in spots. The natural stairs, moss covered rocks and trees, plus the gorgeous view are a bonus to visiting the water fall that doesn't have a strong water flow, but well worth the hike too.

We love to hike. This was a awesome trail. When we arrived at the parking area I was impressed to see the picnic area. However it looks like it is not used very often. This is sad because it is a nice area. There are restroom facilities. The trail is well marked. There are a lot of trees down that have been cut away from the trail and parts of the trail are strenuous. Due to the drought this year the falls are dry but the trail was still a beautiful hike. We will make this one of our favorites.
