The Grace Museum is situated in a refurbished hotel building that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It has separate sections for local history, fine art and children's educational exhibits. Learn about railways, wars and landmarks that shaped the history and lifestyles of Abilene citizens. The art collection is biased towards American Realist styles and includes works by famous artists such as Andy Warhol. The dressing rooms, make-believe games and interactive displays at the children's museum make it perfect for a family outing.

tripadvisorIf you’re considering getting a membership to utilize the children’s play area upstairs as a fun place for your kids to be kids on a rainy afternoon, think again. There’s a KAREN there who will follow your toddler around chastising them before you even have a chance.I’d been there a handful of times with no issue, but this last visit made me regret buying an annual membership and definitely ensured I will not purchase one again or recommend the museum to friends.Obviously kids will run and be loud, obviously most parents will correct them. Having a bored, old woman there with nothing to do other than follow your children around literally putting toys away while your kid is still using them and shushing them as if it’s a library is rather ridiculous. We’ve never had an incident with the other staff members. Some people just aren’t good around children.
MoreMy husband and I visited this museum and enjoyed it very much. On the lower level there is an art gallery which had a photography exhibit at our visit and the ballroom. On the 2nd floor, a very friendly staff member gave us an excellent explanation of the history of Abilene exhibit there. Then we went into the art galleries on that floor which at the time were displaying art work from the schools. The third floor was definitely our favorite part of the museum. In one area, there are recreations of the furnishings of rooms in a home in different time periods---kitchen, parlor, living room. There was also a wonderful display of historical bridal dresses. Another room on the 3rd floor housed an exhibit about the history of the State Epileptic Colony in Abilene. Being a retired nurse, I found this exhibit especially interesting and something I had not known anything about before going to this museum. We spent about 1 hour and 45 minutes there.

MoreNARM reciprocal for free admission, though admission is not expensive. There are three floors in this former 1909 hotel turned museum across from the T&P Depot. First floor is dedicated to changing art exhibits. The second floor highlights women artists and has a large area for children to explore and cultivate their imaginations via the SPARK program. Third floor has period rooms showing kitchen and family room life from 1909 and 1928, an array of period wedding dresses, and other history and area artifacts. Good, varied museum—something for everyone.
MoreIf you have some time, it's worth visiting if you like modern art. It's has a lot of history and the staff was wonderful.
