The Confederate Soldier Monument is located to the southwest of the State Capital building near the Volunteer Fireman monument. This is the work of sculptor Pompeo Coppini and base designer Frank Teich and was erected in 1903. What you will find is a large grey granite base with record of battles and names of States that withdrew from the Union and participated in the Civil War (1861-65) on the side of the Confederacy. Atop the base are five bronze figures representing the four branches of military (Artillery, Cavalry, Infantry and Navy) as well as Confederate Present Jefferson Davis at Centre. Have a look while sightseeing around the Capital grounds, make of the monument what you will.

Disgraceful revisionist history. The Civil War was fought for one reason and one reason only: The preservation of slavery. I had no idea that this abomination was on our capitol grounds and hope that it is torn down as soon as possible. If it is indeed part of our heritage, what heritage does it represent for our fellow black citizens? Put it in a museum, but it has no business on public property; least of all the building which represents our laws and freedoms here in Texas.

As I wandered around the Capital grounds there are several monuments and statues that have lots of historical value and are interesting to read the plaques at the monuments.Wander around the grounds, see the capital and the visitor center.

So this monument is an odd one for me. The monument itself is gorgeous, and you can clearly see the effort and passion that went into its construction. According to the literature provided by on the grounds for the monument, it was erected by survivors of the Confederate Army as a testament to the sacrifices they and their comrades made in combating the 'War of North Aggression'. I feel, as a piece of history, it definitely has a place in providing a view of the Civil War through the lens of those who fought and survived it.With that said, the Lost Cause propaganda on the monument is obvious if being approached with a critical eye. I can imagine eventually this monument will gain the attention of individuals wanting it to be removed from the Texas Capitol Grounds like Lee's Statue was in Virginia due to concern that its inclusion means the Texas government is making a political statement in support of the Confederacy and its values. Regardless, it definitely stands out and as a piece of artistic work it is stunning.

This place is absolutly terribe! There was a janitor working around and when we ran into each other he KICKED my chiwawa across the statues. HE KILLED IT! If you have a small little dog DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT bring them here. Absolutly unacceptable. My children now cry every night because ruffus is dead.
